Brief Bio: Professional

Julie Tam joined WDRB-TV FOX 41 (Louisville, KY) in September 2005. She began as a reporter/fill-in anchor and two years later, anchored FOX News at 10 p.m. on the weekend and reported on weeknights, until February 2010. Julie has been nominated for an Emmy and won several Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists awards. She has performed and spoken at many community events, serves on the Outreach Committee for Crane House: The Asia Institute, and volunteers for Asian American Journalists Association as mentor, Texas chapter webmaster and national Calendar Committee chair. She serves on the Nominations Committee of the Association of Rice Alumni and is Kentucky captain of Rice Alumni Volunteers for Admission. Julie is married and was voted Louisville's "Hottest Anchor" in 2009 by LEO readers. Her TV news insights are published in textbooks. Julie was formerly a reporter at KLTV-TV ABC 7 in Tyler, TX; news/special projects producer at News 24 Houston; producer/host/reporter at PBS Houston; and intern at KTRK-TV ABC 13 and KHWB-TV WB 39 (now KIAH-TV CW 39) in Houston. Julie is founder/president of The Application Masters, an Internet-based college application/essay and document editing service. A native of Houston, Julie earned a B.A. in Economics from Rice University. She is fluent in four languages -- English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese -- and is familiar with several others. She has traveled throughout the country and the world to more than 15 countries on four continents. Julie is a classical singer and danced at the Houston Ballet Academy for 10 years.

Julie Tam is an award-winning TV news anchor/reporter and business owner. She co-anchored and reported for the weekend 10pm newscasts and did live reports for the 10pm news weeknights at WDRB-TV FOX 41 in Louisville, KY from 2005 to 2010. Before that, Julie was a general assignments reporter and community affairs show producer/anchor at KLTV-TV ABC 7 in Tyler, TX, a news/special assignments producer at News 24 Houston, and a producer/host/reporter for a news magazine show on PBS Houston. Over the years, Julie's investigative reports have uncovered mistakes and oversights by government agencies, from the health department to sheriff's and police departments. Her stories have gotten the attention of city council members and led to policy changes. Julie has reported on high-profile stories for the likes of CNN, CourtTV (now truTV), and XM Satellite Radio and interviewed newsmakers like Hillary Clinton and Mary Lou Retton. Julie has been nominated for an Emmy award for Sports News. She has won four Society of Professional Journalists awards over the years: General News (1st, 2nd place), Sports Reporting (1st), and Investigative Reporting (3rd). Just two months into her reporting career, she received a Best Reporter AP honorable mention from Texas Associated Press Broadcasters. Julie is an award-winning classical singer and dancer. Julie is a soprano with a 3-octave vocal range. In high school she trained at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music Preparatory Program. Her solo performances have won her the Houston-area gold medal and Texas state bronze medals in Texas Association of Private & Parochial Schools (TAPPS) competitions. Learn more on her MUSIC page. Julie trained for 10 years at Houston Ballet Academy in ballet, modern dance, jazz, character dance, pas de deux, choreography, and makeup/hair. She has performed around the world.

Julie is a scholar and committed volunteer. Julie's academic profile and college application essay are published in The Princeton Review's book College Essays That Made a Difference (2003), including more than 80 students who were accepted to elite U.S. universities. Julie attended Banff Private School for pre-school through 6th grade and Second Baptist School for 7th through 12th grade. She entered college with 20 credit hours from high scores on Advancement Placement (AP) exams and got perfect and near-perfect scores on the SAT, PSAT, and SAT II exams. Julie gives generously of her time to the local community, Rice University, Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), and her church. Since graduating from Rice with a B.A. in Economics, she has interviewed Rice applicants and represented Rice at college fairs in Texas and has been the Kentucky captain since 2007 for Rice Alumni Volunteers for Admission. Julie serves on the Association of Rice Alumni's Nominations Committee, which selects new board members. She is also the Class of 2003 Recorder for Rice's alumni news publication, Owlmanac. Julie has been a mentor to Rice students and young broadcast journalists through AAJA. Julie is the chair of AAJA's national Calendar Committee and webmaster for AAJA's Texas chapter . Julie serves on the Outreach Committee of Crane House: The Asia Institute, which teaches children and adults about Asian culture and language through programs, classes, and events. She also has been a substitute Sunday School teacher.

Julie is a multilingual world traveler with a diverse background and experiences. Julie is a Chinese-American born in Houston, TX. She is fluent in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese and can speak a little of several other languages. She has traveled to more than 15 countries on four continents and about half of the U.S. states. Her favorite destination is Hong Kong, where her parents are from.
